DWOS Hardware Recommendations

Client Workstations

DWOS can be run on any Microsoft Windows 7 or higher machine. There are various types of computers that are commonly used, here are just a few:
  • All-in-One - An all-in-one computer combines the computer and the monitor into a single, simple to deploy solution. Usually has touch capabilities.
  • Tablet - Tablets, like Windows Surface Pro 3, can be used for the mobile user although these are not ruggedized machines out of the box.
  • Desktop - Standard desktop computer with a separately purchased monitor.
We find many clients prefer the all-in-one configuration for its simplicity.

Recommended Configuration

  • CPU: Intel or AMD Dual Core or Higher, 32-bit or 64-bit
  • RAM: 4GB or more
  • Disk Space: 50GB or more
  • Network: Gigabit
  • Operating System: Windows 7 or higher

Server System

DWOS server is typically run on a Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM or higher machine, but we also support servers running Windows Server 2008 R2. DWOS can be run on a client workstation, but it may limit the capabilities of DWOS.

It is recommended that you employ a backup solution for your DWOS database. A simple solution that we recommend is using a Barracuda Backup Server, due to its simplicity and ease of use.

Recommended Configuration

  • CPU: Intel or AMD Dual Core or Higher, 32-bit or 64-bit
  • RAM: 8GB or more
  • Disk Space: 100GB or more
  • Network: Gigabit
  • Operating System: Windows Server 2012 R2 or higher

Label Printers

DWOS uses label printers to optionally print work order labels, shipping, and package labels. DWOS utilizes the most common label printing technology from Zebra and requires any printer that is a Zebra-compatible Thermal Printer supporting ZPL® or ZPL II® (Zebra Programming Language) or EPL (Eltron Programming Language). For most use cases we recommend the Zebra GX420t label printer with a USB connection, as it is a high quality and commonly used printer.

NOTE: Non-ZPL printers will not work with DWOS directly. Some printers do have ZPL emulation and can be used once turned on.
NOTE: Label printer is not designed to use continuous media labels. Please use die-cut (pre-sized) labels, for examples a roll of 4" X 3" labels.

Barcode Scanners

DWOS uses barcodes scanners for scanning work orders into and out of the system. DWOS uses a common 2D barcode symbology called Code 128 and we recommend any barcode scanner that can read these 2D barcodes. You can purchase scanners that are either wired (USB) or  wireless (Bluetooth). As with most things, you get what you pay for, though there are many brands out there that produce a solid scanner in the $50 - $100 price range.

Document Scanners
DWOS can use document scanners for scanning documents directly into a work order, part or quote. Any industry standard TWAIN compliant scanner should work.

NOTE: Some scanners only work with a proprietary drivers and do not use TWAIN standard. These scanners can still be used to scan documents, but they cannot be controlled directly from DWOS.

NOTE: Scanners connected via network cables may not allow TWAIN operations over the network. Please ensure that you can use standard Microsoft Windows scanning tools to acquire scans from your device. If Microsoft Windows cannot identify the document scanner, then DWOS will not be able to see it either as DWOS only uses the list of TWAIN compliant devices registered with your machine.

Smart Card

DWOS uses a flexible and inexpensive type of programmable smart card called a BasicCard by Zeit Control Systems. DWOS can easily read and write these cards for you, but you must have the correct version of the card. These cards cost around $2- $3 per card. The versions that currently work with DWOS are listed below:
  • ZC3.12
  • ZC3.13
  • ZC3.14

Below is a list of vendors where  you can purchase these cards:
Almex Limited
Zeit
Smartcard Focus

Smart Card Reader

The smart card reader will read the your smart card and verify who you are. Most any smart card reader will work with these cards. We use the SCM SCR3310 or similar USB Smart Card Reader.

Smart Card Printer

Optionally, if you want to print your logo and user names on your smart card you will need to buy a card printer. We use the Evolis Pebble 4 Card printer, though almost any card printer will work. Ensure you get a monochrome or color printer based on your needs.

Android Tablet

DWOS has a mobile version that runs on the Android platform. We require a device that is running at least version 4.2 of the Android operating system. You can use any form factor (i.e. device size), but at least a form factor of 7" - 10"+ is recommended.
